ketchup for elephants.

Joc, Em and I took in a movie tonight after class -- darn skippy, we can do fun stuff on school nights in grad school! We saw "Water for Elephants" with RPat and Reese. Very visually beautiful movie. Didn't feel like much happened...but....we obviously ate french fries....so I'd have been happy just to snack and watch with earplugs in!

91 pages.

I realize that by every photographer's standards--professional or amateur--this may be the worst picture ever taken.

However, to the trained eye, it is quite possibly the most gratifying, aesthetically pleasing, breathe-a-huge-sigh-of-relief sighting I've ever gazed upon. This, my friends, is a 91-page proposal I've been working with a group on for the entire semester. And tonight we gave a 45-minute presentation on it and turned that sucker in!

At this point, I have no idea if what's inside it is any good at all!! (Mostly because my eyes are still crossed from the marathon weekend). But, quite honestly, I don't really care. It's done!! High fives all around :)

One down, two to go!!

naughty pineapples.

An afternoon of libraryness was rewarded this evening with drinks and dinner at the awesome Mexican'ish restaurant, Lolita. Wonderful time eating guacamole + fish tacos with Miss Emily and Miss Susan :) Happiness!! To top it all off, they bring ya cotton candy topped with pop-rocks (and an extra heap if ya bond with your waiter over Ricky Martin).

bring on finals!!

"thanks, mom!"

Jocelyn's mom arrived at the Capers-Sterling Hotel last night (yay!). As she was unpacking her bags, Jocelyn and I were busy lil graduate students typing away on our laptops in the living room. At one point, she walked into the room and handed Joc a new mouth guard and me some Mary Kay acne cream......yep.

Who knew that combined we are Screech Powers from Saved By the Bell??

thanks mom!

PS -- We awoke to wonderful surprises this morning on the kitchen table! Apparently she brought the Easter bunny with her, too :) Thanks, Mrs. Dottie!

technical difficulties.

Sorry for pestering you all with an e-mail this afternoon to listen to the radio show....and then I wasn't even on it! We had a very odd technical difficulty in the studio and no one could hear me for some strange reason (nor could I hear them)! So I sat there patiently and just watched everyone's faces as the show proceeded to continue -- which was still entertaining! I hear it was a great one, though, so I hope you were able to enjoy!

Be sure to tune in next week (Wed @ 2:45) for our vegan-body-builder guest speaker! I promise I'll be there :)

is this thing on??

On the air: Poor Susan was working her fingers to the bone--during the show--to fix the sitch! She's the best host ever!!

worship.

A fellow CityLife church member shared this today, and I thought that it's brevity and power were remarkable. I hope it inspires you to also "be careful with the best you have."

"And he pitched his tent having Bethel on the west and Ai on the east: and there he builded an altar." - Genesis 12:8

"Worship is giving God the best that He has given you. Be careful what you do with the best you have. Whenever you get a blessing from God, give it back to Him as a love gift. Take time to meditate before God and offer the blessing back to Him in a deliberate act of worship. If you hoard a thing for yourself, it will turn into spiritual dry rot, as the manna did when it was hoarded. God will never let you hold a spiritual thing for yourself, it has to be given back to Him that He may make it a blessing to others.

Bethel is the symbol of communion with God; Ai is the symbol of the world. Abraham pitched his tent between the two. The measure of the worth of our public activity for God is the private profound communion we have with Him. Rush is wrong every time, there is always plenty of time to worship God. Quiet days with God may be a snare. We have to pitch our tents where we shall always have quiet times with God, however noisy our times with the world may be. There are not three stages in spiritual life - worship, waiting and work. Some of us go in jumps like spiritual frogs, we jump from worship to waiting, and from waiting to work. God's idea is that the three should go together. They were always together in the life of Our Lord. He was unhasting and unresting. It is a discipline, we cannot get into it all at once."

proCRASStination.

You'd only ever see something this awesome on an Emerson College bulletin board :)

This flyer (and my pending and well-procrastinated Media Strategies paper) inspired me to come up with a list of a few of my favorite pieces of entertainment...with help from my Weeyam Brother and Joccy Joc.

Katy's Randomly-Listed-Top-Twelve-And-Only-Twelve-Cuz-It's-My-Blog-Goshdarnit Fave Movies
  1. The Bodyguard (The perfect movie: A romantic musical hidden underneath an action mystery!)
  2. Fast and the Furious (But not Tokyo Drift and soon-to-be Fast5!)
  3. You've Got Mail (Let's be honest, that's #1.)
  4. Harry Potter 1-7 pt. 1 (and soon-to-be 7 pt. 2!)
  5. Runaway Bride (CBA, I love montages and wide-screen shots!)
  6. When Harry Met Sally (That's Meg x2!)
  7. Life is Beautiful (If you haven't seen it, get it NOW! Not kidding. There will be a quiz.)
  8. Speed (But only the first one! Speed on a cruise ship?! Negative.)
  9. Steel Magnolias (The cemetery scene.)
  10. Gone in 60 Seconds (Throwback: First boy-girl movie party!)
  11. Monster's Inc. (I'm 4.)
  12. Never Been Kissed (The ending nails every. single. time!)
(Honorable Mentions: Top Gun and Finding Nemo!)

I'm sure you've noticed the super-girly-slash-oober-cheesy-car-movie theme going on (with magical-monster undertones)....but I can't help it! Hopefully, #7 and #9 will redeem me in the eyes of you movie snobs out there!! Maybe my tastebuds are a little unrefined (i.e. crass!)...but come on! The Bodyguard?!?! Classic.

I think this may inspire another need-to-see list to come soon! Any suggestions??

Quite eventful, eh?

spring has sprung!!

Welcome April showers! Welcome (minor and kinda pathetic) humidity! Welcome (hardly any at all) pollen! Welcome sunny skies and double-digit temperatures! Spring has finally sprung and I'm soaking up all the Vitamin D for seasonal euphoria :)

I almost fainted today when I saw all these beautiful flowers on my walk home from the grocery store (and I was only wearing a light jacket, by the way!) I think I'm finally starting to appreciate all of the aspects of four very different seasons! One more thing I've learned from the lovely Boston :)

move 'em up, head 'em out!

MHC, sucking all the air out of her homemade vacuum packs for a smooshed travel home!! I MISS YOU, chicky!!

sweeeet caroline!!

I've decided I'm gonna be a Red Sox fan! I can't wait for the Red Sox pessimism to take over, but until then....

MHC and I scored tickets to the Red Sox vs. Yankees Opening Weekend game today!!! We sat in a sea of trash-talkers who cursed like sailors, ten-year season-ticket holders, and hilarious old (drunk) men who called us Georgia #1 and Georgia #2. We had an absolute blast singing "Sweet Caroline" in the 8th and learning about all the Red Sox traditions from the faithful surrounding us. Though we lost (sad face!), I'm sure I'll never forget such a fun, beautiful afternoon in the sun for a little game of baseball!

We're in it to win it :)

go sox!!

What did the ghetto small person say to the super giant basketball player standing next to him??
Utah! (pronounced "You tall!")

only time i ever wanna lose.

All you need to know is....

....Mary Helen and I already bought 2 tickets to the big home-season-opener game this Saturday....

....but we had already bid on another set of tickets on e-Bay....

....so if no one else bid, we would have had 4 tickets (for two people) and a lot of debt (for a student and teacher duo)....

....we were stressing the whole morning and couldn't concentrate on adoring each other the whole time!!....

....WOULD ANYONE ELSE BUY THESE TICKETS?!?! AGH!!!....

....we are depressed....

....until....

....we got outbid! HOORAY!!!! Happy Katy + MHC :) Thus, best e-mail ever.

MHC IS HERE!!!

Life-long friend, Mary Helen (aka MHC, aka Muck, aka Hairy Melon), is in my town!! HOORAY! She's just about the cutest person ever created so you can imagine my surprise when she was able to fit all of her adorableness into one carry-on suitcase for her five-day adventure....

Step 1: Stuff clothes in zip-lock bags.
Step 2: Sit on the bag.
Step 3: Suck all the air out and zip it up.
Step 4: COME TO BOSTONNN!!!!

graaanola.

Katie, Kevin and I made some super yummo homemade granola the other day, so I thought I'd share the oober simple, ultra cheap recipe! My tweaked version courtesy of Barefoot Contessa from the Food Network.

Ingredients:
4 cups old-fashioned rolled oats
2 cups sweetened shredded coconut
2 cups sliced almonds
3/4 cup vegetable oil
1/2 cup good honey
1 cup dried cherries
1 cup dried cranberries

Directions:
Toss the oats, coconut,  and almonds together in a large bowl. Whisk together the oil and honey in a small bowl. Pour the liquids over the oat mixture and stir with a wooden spoon until all the oats and nuts are coated. Pour onto a 13 x 18 x 1-inch sheet pan. Bake, stirring occasionally with a spatula, until the mixture turns a nice, even, golden brown, about 45 minutes. (Watch it carefully because it'll burn fast!)

Remove the granola from the oven and allow to cool, stirring occasionally (...throwing it in the freezer also works, too!). Add the cherries and cranberries. Store it all in an airtight container.

These measurements make a ton for ya to nibble on for weeks. It's absolutely delicious over plain greek or french vanilla yogurt. Add a dash of honey for a smidge more sweetness if you use the greek yogurt and enjoy a day full of energy!!

say yogurt + granola!

ahoy, matey!!

We rode on a bus, a train, and a boat today! And we toured one (the U.S.S. Constitution), too!!

Saturday, April 2, 2011

we are the children.

Katie (the best friend) and Kevin (the best friend's fiance) are here!!! HOORAYYYYY!!!

We started off the morning at a walk for Haiti in Cambridge...and we may or may not have creeped on the Harvard soccer team for the majority of our time there....

Then we were off to a Freedom Trail tour (including Ben Franklin's grave and a never-ending search for Paul Revere's house) and then Kevin surprised Katie with a fancy night out on the town in the North End! And per our usual, we topped off the evening with some mint chocolate chip ice cream, a (embarrassing) Red Sox game, and Love&Basketball (Kev's all-time fave movie).

happy katy :)
